How To Do Search Engine Optimization

Getting your site to rank highly in search engines is considered a necessary part of creating your online presence these days. Whilst it is possible to pay consultants to do this work for you, it is estimated around 75 percent of organisations simply do their own SEO work. The advantage being that it is a whole lot cheaper and more convenient, especially if you are running a small business. So how do you make your site achieve its optimum ranking in search engines?

There is no one set formula that will get your site to a high rank in search engines, but there are definitely common factors that you need to consider.

Firstly and perhaps most simply, include keywords. Think of what product you are selling and what likely searches a potential buyer might do to find your site. Next look at the site and see if you have used any of these phrases. If you have quality content on your page it should be a snap to see where you can include the keywords that describe your product.

This takes us to the next point, page content optimization. As with the previous point, you want your keywords to appear regularly in your website, but you want this to be in a natural way. Be careful when you incorporate key words, so called key word stuffing may draw search engines to look at your site but you also want your buyer to be drawn in by the site as well! Write your content and include the key words were they most naturally fit.

Next look at title optimization, do the titles and names of the pages include key words in a natural way. This also applies to domain names, and if it is possible to incorporate key words here, then it can be valuable to do so. Also consider if the keywords are used to navigate the site and on the navigation tool on your website. It also pays to include a site map, which if you have successfully worked keywords into page titles, should be the one page on your site that is stuffed full of key words!

Once you have looked at optimizing your content and titles it pays to look at the links within your website. When search engine tools crawl websites rating and evaluating pages, these internal links are integral to the way in which your site is evaluated. Incorporating links via key words to other parts of your website can be as important as getting links from external sites into your website. Whilst click here links can be good for sales, it is also worthwhile including links via words in the text to different parts of your website, as these links guide the search engine tool through your pages.

Finally source high quality links from other sites, if you can get traffic in from another higher ranked site this can help you to optimize your search engine results more quickly. The more quality links there are to your site, the faster the search engine is likely to find it and the faster you will be able to optimize your search engine results.

Ultimately, successful search engine optimization is not an exact science for the web site creator. Whilst the development of search engines tools is based on the use of algorithms, these are generally a closely guarded secret. Keeping up to date with forums about SEO and keeping your website content up to date and keyword enhanced will give you the best chance to succeed in your search engine optimization.

The Importance of Fresh Content for SEO

October 30, 2009 by admin

Google and the search engines live or die by the quality of their search results. If their results aren’t relevant, then searchers will go elsewhere, and their empires will crumble.

Often, more recent information is more relevant. Think of news stories or industry trends. Is it any use if Google keeps throwing up five year old articles when you type in “investment tips”, or news about Bill Clinton when you type in “new president”?

So, what has this got to do with SEO?

SEO is about understanding what search engines and web users want. If both want fresh, relevant, compelling content – then it makes sense to provide it.

And a company that offers what search engines and users want tends to rank higher in the search results, and consequently make more sales.

Google’s view on fresh content

It’s one thing to speculate on the power of fresh content. It’s another to hear it championed by the world’s most successful web company. Here’s Google in their November ‘08 webmaster search engine optimisation documents:

“Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors [discussed in the document]…This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means. Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site’s reputation with both users and Google, and it rarely comes without quality content.”

Furthermore, on the topic of “freshness”, Google’s historical patent data is revealing. A document is stale if it is: “no longer updated, diminished in importance, or superceded by another document“.

In practical terms, that means that your site and webpages will be ranked higher by Google if:

– Your content has been recently uploaded or amended (more likely to be relevant)

– You have lots of recently added inbound links (shows web users see you as relevant)

– You have lots of traffic (lots of visitors mean it’s probably a useful page)

– People spend a long time on your page/site (the longer they’re there, the more useful the content)

Further SEO benefits…

We’ve established then that Google loves regularly updated content – but what other SEO benefits does fresh content offer? Here are just a few:

– Become an “authority”. If you become a valued resource for opinion or information, then more people will link to you. If there’s one thing that search engines love, it’s links. It’s also a great way to improve your reputation and credibility.

– Better spread of keywords. Keywords are the backbone of search. They’re the phrases that people enter into search engines to find what they need. The more combinations of keywords you can rank for, the more traffic you’ll get. By adding lots of content related to your business, you’ll be adding lots of phrases and words to your site that the search engines can find and index.

– The more you update your site, the more frequently search engines will crawl your web pages for indexing.

– If you blog you may also appear in blog search engines, or even on the front page of community sites such as Digg.

All of these factors can help drive an amazing amount of traffic to your site. Particularly if you work with an established SEO company to get the best results.

As a final note, remember that content is about users first, search engines second. Provide the right content for users, and the search engines will follow. Combine a targeted content strategy with professional SEO agency services and you could see your web conversions increase dramatically.

How To Increase Your Search Engine Rankings

October 30, 2009 by admin

search engine optimization can seem like rocket science sometimes. Some would have you believe that optimizing your website is a long expensive complicated process. That is not really the case. There are some very simple basic techniques you can use to optimize your website to increase it’s search engine ranking.

Why do you even need to optimized your website? A high search engine ranking for your website is so important that if you intend to succeed with an online business you simply cannot avoid this issue. Statistics show that 80% of people looking for products or services online use search engines like to Msn, Google and Yahoo find what they are looking for. The reason for optimizing your website is to attract highly targeted visitors to you site, visitors who are more likely to make a purchase. The higher your web pages come up in the search results the more traffic your site will receive.

There are thousands of optimization websites available online, you could dive in head first into this techno jungle and most likely you will probably never be heard from again. Or you could make some small adjustments to your website that will soon improve your ranking.

*Take a look at your home page, look for a colored bar at the top of the page, this is the title bar. The words that appear in the title bar should be your most important key words. These words help to improve your ranking.

*Next click on all of your links and check the title bar of all of your pages. Be sure they include all of your relevant keywords. Do not overload your title bar with a long string of keywords; keep it to about four or six. Do not repeat keywords in your title bar and be sure to separate identical words.

*Search engines are impressed with quality more than quantity. Do not have your web pages covered in fancy graphics. Search engines will see your site as having little use to its searchers, instead look to fill your pages with quality content, useful information that the search engines can use. The text on your site should contain a light smattering of your keywords; these are the words that the search engines are going to look for when sending results to their searchers.

*The text on your web pages must be written in HTML (hyper text markup language) so that the search engines can read your text. Be sure to check and find out if your text is in HTML format, if not ask your Webmaster to change it for you.

*Many folks believe that meta tags are the key to search engine optimization. The truth is that they only have a small effect. It is however still worth having them as every little bit helps. To find out if your page has meta tags click the “view” button on the browser menu bar, and select “source.” This will bring up a window showing the code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. A meta tag would read: meta name=”keywords” content=. If you cannot see any code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in. Just remember that this will probably not do much for your search engine rankings.

*Linking is extremely important in terms of search engine rankings. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link popularity is based on the quality of the sites you have linked too and who have linked to you. If you want to check your link popularity go to a popular search engine and type in link:www.mywebsite.com (replace yourwebsite.com with your website domain name) If you find that you do not have any incoming links to your website you must consider beginning a good linking campaign. This would involve contacting webmasters with good quality websites to exchange links with you. It is a slow process but it is most definitely worth the effort. Linking to high quality sites increases your rankings and traffic dramatically.

If you decide to ignore all of the marketing tips in this article please do not underestimate the power of linking. Remember the higher your search engine ranking, the more quality customers will be directed your way, and that means more money in your pocket.

Let’s Play- the Google Sandbox Beckons the Sandbox?

October 30, 2009 by admin

The sandbox can be defined as a virtual space where your website lies on a temporary hold or probation for some time before it receives a good ranking in the search engine results pages. One thing to keep in mind is that though new websites receive a good ranking and visibility in Google’s SERPS for a couple of weeks after being indexed by Google, this does not last. Instead, their ranking starts touching lows after this initial period is over in spite of having original and optimized content and also having genuine inbound links to one’s website.

Stated more simply, the sandbox acts as a filter which lists your website but does not rank it well for the initial few months. Since almost all new websites are sandboxed, experts do give us some warnings. They say that the more usage of competitive keywords on your site, the more the probability that your website will be sandboxed for a longer duration. Another thing to remember is that a sandboxed site is indexed by Google but is not well ranked for keyword phrases.

Watch out!

Not only are new websites sandboxed, even well established sites that receive various links from other websites all at once are also likely to experience sandboxed. The reason why this is done is because Google discovered that spammers actually divide a single site into fragments so that they can facilitate the exchange of links. Thus, they also create new websites deigned with the intention of providing valuable links to the other websites.

So, what is the need for a sandbox?

Google felt that a website filter was an important requirement so that they could keep search engine spammers away. How did they realize this? Actually search engine spammers were able to crack Google’s algorithm and started using it for their own advantage. Spammers created websites that were not up to Google’s standards but, still managed to get top listing. This was because of the usage of keywords, inbound links and use of anchor text.

Even though Google would discover these websites and ban them, it was still conducive for the spammers. Even though they received the top ranking of Google for a short time, the visiting traffic to their websites during this time more than compensated the spammers for the cost of building these sites in the first place. We need to remember that Google never admits the sandbox exists, but webmasters confirm that new websites new definitely sandboxed for the initial months.

Escaping the sandbox

No matter how much one wants to find a solution, the only way to get out of the sandbox is to wait for the probation period to end. However, one can use this time constructively by improving one’s website so that it works for one’s advantage. One way to so is by including content that is unique and increasing the number of affiliations through inbound links to your website. Stop focusing on search engine traffic only and work on other aspects that exist.

So, am I in the Sandbox?

One can know this through the simple process of elimination. Firstly, you need to make sure that you get rid of the possibility that Google will ban your website. If this is done and your ranking with Google is still low, then you need to make sure that the possibility of being sandboxed because of high usage of competitive words is also eliminated. If in spite of all precautions, your ranking remains low then the chances are that you have been sandboxed. Also, if other search engines rank your website well and you don’t get a good ranking with Google, again it would confirm that you may be sandboxed. So, play the game and win.

Ideas to Keep your Online Home Business in Income Generating Mode

October 30, 2009 by admin

It is important that you continue doing what has worked up to now to drive targeted traffic to your online home business, which has turned it into an income generating business.

Here are some ideas to help you maintain momentum and increase your web income.

Regularly write and submit articles to the article directories and be sure to place your keywords in the title of the article as well as the body and to anchor your keyword phrase and url to your website in the author resource box to increase the one way backlinks to your site.

Make regular constructive and positive contributions in forums which will increase the backlinks to your site.

Strive to get good quality links to your website. Search for high ranking pages which are related to your industry and then email the webmaster requesting a link.

Build your links steadily and surely, it does not pay to go and buy hundreds of backlinks as this is frowned upon by the search engines. Google, in particular, gives credit where it is due, by rewarding sites which are accumulating genuine backlinks.

Continue submitting your website to the Directories. Check if they allow for the indexing of your web pages so you benefit from the backlink.

Some Directories offer both free and paid submissions, with a long time delay for the free submissions which are subject to a reciprocal link on your site, so be sure to check if your site has been listed into the directory. Bear in mind that it has been known for some directories to never add the free listings, in the hope that you will eventually opt for the paid listing and in the meantime you will be linking to a directory with no link back and the directory is benefiting from the exposure on your site.

Check your backlinks on a regular basis, once a week is ideal. You can be penalized by the search engines for linking to sites that do not link back. Use a good backlink checker or link exchange software to check your link exchanges

Remove unnecessary links from your web page. By linking out to these web sites you will be giving away a portion of your page rank which you could be passing through to your site and at the same time you could be jeopardizing your rankings by doing this.

Regularly check that all the links on your own online home business website are functioning properly.

Periodically check your autoresponder messages by sending a test message to yourself.

Keep a daily check on your pay per click campaigns to ensure that they are running to budget and make any necessary adjustments to keep up with the competition. Also check on any other paid advertising that you may have running.

Continue with your social bookmarking and blogging regularly.

Keep an eye on the positioning of your web site in the search engine results and continue optimizing your website and adding fresh content to stay ahead of your competition and ensure you site ranks well.

To recap, keep doing and checking on what you were doing to get your online home business to the income-generating stage and add extra methods of internet marketing to further propel the momentum to increase your online home business income.
