Are you working hard to optimize your website or blog? These handy tips should help you in getting an extra push.

1. Consider using captions along with images. Just like newspaper photos, you have to place captions (coupled with images) that are rich with keywords.

2. Pay due attention to the underlying context around your images. Sometimes, images rank concerning the text surrounding them on a particular page. Also focus on keyword text, or headings.

3. You are much better off when you let your website pages discovered naturally by crawlers. A quality global navigation as well as linking can serve your purposes better than those traditional XML Sitemaps.

4. There are 2 ways for NOT seeing the Personalized Search results of Google

(1) Logging out from Google

(2) Putting &pws=0 at the search URL’s end (on the search bar)

5. Links (particularly deep links) coming from a site with high PageRank is a great thing. And usually, High PR equals to high trust. That way, your back links will be weightier.

6. Consider using absolute links. This will save the navigation of the on-site links from being problem prone (like what happens to ‘links to’ or ‘link from’ https pages). Yet, when somebody scrapes out your content, you will enjoy the backlink juice from it.

7. Check whether the hosting company has a policy of offering “Sticky” forwarding while you move to any new domain. If it does, then this permits temporary forwarding to that new domain from the older one, while retaining that new URL into address bar. This is to make sure that users are gradually getting used to your new URL.

8. Take social marketing seriously. It’s part of the basic SEO. Your competing ability in search will keep increasing with your knowledge and expertise with sites such as Digg, Yelp, or Facebook, and so on.

9. Some SEO experts hold that it is good to build a decent video sitemap for listing it into your Google Webmaster Central account. This way, they say, your videos have better chance of being crawled by robots.

10. Videos showing up at Google search results do not come only from YouTube. That is why many people submits their videos to many other top-notch video sites as Metacafe, AOL, or MSN.

11. When it comes to videos on a webpage, they are supposed to be surrounded with keyword rich content. For gauging the value and relevance of a video against the query, Search engines do look at contents adjacent to the video.

12. For video enthusiast web site owners, using the words like “image” and/or “picture” (in the photo ALT descriptions as well captions) is getting huge popularity. Lots of searches now a day are on a particular keyword plus a word or two like those.

And finally, you should enable the option labeled as “Enhanced image search” at your Google Webmaster Central account. Today, images happen to be some of the largest parts of search results. This means that letting Google find the photos in your website helps SEO efforts.

SEO means search engine optimization – a method that will improve the visibility of a website in the search engine listings, but you probably already know that. Then I should probably let you know what SEO is not: a magic wand that will bring your website a top 20 position over night. SEO takes time, commitment, skills and effort. SEO’s purpose is to increase relevant traffic to your website and generate more revenue.

For SEO to work you need to have a website designed according to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), that means a website without technical difficulties (flash, improper Java scripts, frames) and with a clear, user friendly design. Once you have that, start your SEO work.

As you’ve often heard, keywords are important. Don’t optimize your website for terms no one has ever heard about, but for what people might want to find on your website. Use the keywords in your Meta tags: title, description, keywords. Search engines find the title tag crucial to determine what a page is all about and index it. So don’t give the same title to all your web pages. Write a short, descriptive, keyword rich title that would also act as a sales pitch. The Meta title’s text goes on page, maybe a longer version. The higher on the page the better. Maybe you should place it in the visible title as well. Use tags.

Content is king. How many times have you heard that? Well, that’s true if we put it this way: “fresh content is king”. If you want higher rankings add new pages of content to your website on regular basis. Make them interesting and carefully place them in the right category.

Linking is also very important: both incoming and outgoing links mater. Don’t exchange links with irrelevant sites. Your linking partners should be somehow related to your industry. Linking with spammy sites and link farms will only damage your website’s position in the search engines results. It’s also a good idea to interlink the pages within your website. Don’t do it with a “click here” button, but with a keyword rich text link.

Google maps – the new trend – will help search engines find all the important web pages you want to index. It’s important that you make a site map for your visitors as well – that means a collection of plain text links to the most important categories of your website.

And here’s what you should never do: repeat words too often on a page – that’s considered keyword stuffing and will get your site penalized. Also don’t use hidden text on your pages. Google and other search engines know when you use hidden text, so don’t try to fool them. Stick to ethical SEO practices and you’ll see, in time, you will get the results you want. The key is, it takes time so be patient!
